Skip the Crowds: Explore New Jersey’s 5 Quietest Trails and Parks This Month
Peaceful trails in New Jersey are a wonderful oasis in a busy state, and these are some of our favorites.
New Jersey is one of those states that truly moves a mile a minute. And here in the Garden State, we like it that way. We're the most densely populated state in the country by a wide margin, and everywhere you look, you'll find a quaint city or charming small town to explore. As much as I love this vibe, there are still times I really need to escape the hustle and bustle. That's a perfect time to explore some of the most peaceful trails in New Jersey. These trails range from hidden gems inside little-known county parks or wildlife sanctuaries to secluded havens in some of the best state parks in the country. Ranging from easy to moderate, they are ideal hiking trails for beginners and families. The trails all have one thing in common. These are some of the few places you'll be able to find true peace, quiet, and natural beauty no matter where you explore.
1. Garrett Family Perimeter Trail
Located in the small Garrett Family Preserve in Cape May, this laid-back trail is a 1.4-mile loop suitable for all skill levels. The trail is very popular with birdwatchers and has ADA-accessible features to make sure everyone can enjoy it. Viewing platforms and a beautiful butterfly statue are among the highlights.
2. Windbeam Mountain Overlook Trail
As one of the most beautiful state parks in New Jersey, Ringwood State Park is far from a hidden gem. It's packed with trails, and the Windbeam Mountain Overlook Trail is a great way to see the summit without an epic trek. This two-mile moderate hike has several fantastic viewpoints along the way, including some lesser-known overlooks for quiet reflection.
3. Cameron's Wildlife Sanctuary Loop
The Park North Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary is another hidden gem in the Cape May area, and this might just be the best hidden park in New Jersey. Due to its remote location and the other attractions in the area, you'll rarely find it too crowded. The best way to explore is to take an easy 0.9-mile loop trail which will take you past great bird-watching spots. This is an ideal snowshoeing park during the winter.
4. Frelinghuysen Arboretum
The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is one of my favorite hidden gems in New Jersey. This massive 127-acre garden is a free public attraction, home to historic buildings, fields of flowers, and two small trails that will take you around an enclosure containing over 2,000 species of trees. While this is a popular attraction, the large size and multiple trails mean you should be able to find some peace and quiet.
5. Birchwood Lake via Red Trail Loop
Tourne County Park, located in Denville in northern New Jersey, isn't really well-known outside its geographical area. That means its multiple trails, most of which take you around the beautiful Birchwood Lake, are easy to explore when you need a break. The Red Trail Loop is an easy 3.7-mile hike, making it a perfect choice for a brisk afternoon.
